NHD

For the past 20 years my students participated in History Fairs sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and National History Day (NHD). I find the program to be highly educational, a valuable tool to develop critical thinking skills, and for enhancing reading, writing, and research skills needed for college. It is one of my favorite parts of being a history teacher.

Many of the posts on the site are great topics for use in a History Fair project. However, if you are a student, you should be using a variety of primary sources, books, and other documents. Go visit historical sites, read books, and don’t just rely on the Internet. I am always available to help you find other sources or to tell you where I got my information. If you need help with your NHD or history fair project, always ask your teacher first.

If you need more clarification about a source, photo, or a document, please email me at: historyrat@yahoo.com

Good luck on your projects!

  1. Hi, My name is Abby and my partner and I are starting research for NHD 2015 early to get ahead of the others. The theme for 2015 is Leaders and Legacies. We are trying to decide on a topic and I’m wondering if you might be able to help us with deciding.

  2. Hi, I’m writing about Allan Pinkerton for NHD 2015. Can you tell me where you got your information on Pinkerton’s pioneering the mug shots. From my own research, mug shots were already invented before Pinkerton. Did you mean that Pinkerton innovated the mug shots by finding a new use for it or something similar?
